Immigrants Fill 90% of New U.S. Jobs Since 2020, Sparking Debate on Labor Market Impact

New data reveals that immigrants have filled nearly 90% of the new jobs created in the U.S. since 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A newly created position, which didn’t exist before and is now being filled by a new employee, signifies a net increase in employment. Of the 5.4 million net new jobs, immigrants secured 4.7 million, while U.S.-born workers gained only 645,000 positions. In the past year alone, immigrants have taken 1.9 million new jobs, or 72% of total job growth. Research from the Center for Immigration Studies suggests that 60% of these new immigrant-held jobs went to individuals in the country illegally.
