Redistricting Battle Heats Up: GOP Warns of Courtroom Showdown With Newsom

California Democrats’ push to advance Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan is drawing sharp criticism and legal resistance from Republicans in the state assembly. GOP lawmakers say they were given little time to review the proposal before a key hearing, accusing Democrats of “disenfranchising Californians” by sidelining the state’s independent redistricting commission. Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo blasted the process as rushed and unfair, warning that Republicans are prepared to fight the effort in the legislature, the courts, and at the ballot box. Meanwhile, four Republican lawmakers have already filed a lawsuit with the state’s Supreme Court, arguing that Newsom’s plan undermines voter-approved measures that took redistricting power out of politicians’ hands. If Democrats succeed, the proposal—designed to counter GOP gains in Texas—could eliminate as many as five Republican congressional seats in California.
