Where Americans Are Moving in 2025, According to U-Haul

Texas and Florida Lead the Moving Map—Again
For another year, Americans are packing up and heading south. According to the 2025 Growth Index from U-Haul, Texas and Florida once again top the list of states gaining the most new residents through one-way moves.
The index analyzed more than 2.5 million U-Haul one-way transactions across the U.S. and Canada, tracking where people rented equipment in one state and dropped it off in another. Texas reclaimed the No. 1 spot for the seventh time in the past decade, followed closely by Florida.
A Clear Migration Pattern Emerges
U-Haul says the data continues to show a “discernable” trend of blue-to-red state migration. Seven of the top 10 growth states are currently led by Republican governors, while most of the states losing residents are governed by Democrats.
Rounding out the top five growth states were North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Meanwhile, the states with the largest net losses included California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.
Sunshine, Space, and Opportunity
Warm weather continues to be a major draw. Eight of the top 10 in-migration states are located in the South, reinforcing the appeal of sunshine, lower taxes, and, in many cases, a lower cost of living.
The top 10 also included Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Alabama, and Georgia. Oregon made one of the biggest jumps, climbing 23 spots year over year, while Ohio saw the steepest drop.
What the Index Really Measures
U-Haul cautions that the Growth Index doesn’t directly measure population growth or economic output. Instead, it serves as a real-time snapshot of where Americans are choosing to put down roots — and which states are struggling to hold onto them.
