A new Mayo Clinic study warns that chronic insomnia—affecting up to 70 million Americans—can drastically increase the risk of some of the nation’s deadliest health conditions, including dementia, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Researchers found that insomnia raises dementia risk by 40 percent, the equivalent of aging the brain nearly four years. Poor sleep disrupts the body’s essential repair processes, fueling hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and cardiovascular strain. Experts say the findings underscore that treating insomnia is not just about better rest—it’s a critical step in preventing long-term, life-threatening disease.
