South Dakota Strengthens Support for Veterans with New Legislation

Governor Larry Rhoden has signed four significant pieces of legislation into law, reaffirming South Dakota’s commitment to supporting its military members and veterans. These new laws reflect the state’s dedication to providing enhanced services, opportunities, and recognition for those who have served the nation.
Governor Rhoden emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “As Governor, my goal is to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free — and that wouldn’t be possible without all of our brave men and women in uniform. These bills are a sign of support for all of our dedicated military members and the veterans who gave so much for us. Because of their sacrifices, our nation remains the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
One of the key pieces of legislation, Senate Bill 6, authorizes a loan from the South Dakota Housing Infrastructure Fund to a school district located near a federal military installation. This loan will help with the construction or expansion of school buildings, ensuring that children of military families have access to quality education while their parents are stationed in South Dakota. This bill underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring that military families are well-supported, not just through their service but also in their everyday lives.
Another important bill, House Bill 1161, makes it easier for veterans to obtain a veteran designation on their commercial driver’s licenses or learner’s permits. By allowing additional forms of verification for military service, the bill streamlines the process and provides veterans with an official way to recognize their service, while also making it easier for them to access benefits tied to this designation.
House Bill 1188 offers nonresident military members stationed in South Dakota the ability to purchase a three-day temporary waterfowl license, allowing them to take part in the state’s hunting traditions. This bill acknowledges the sacrifices made by military personnel and ensures that they can enjoy outdoor recreation during their time in the state, further fostering their connection to the community.
Finally, House Bill 1238 provides critical protections for veterans seeking assistance with veterans’ benefit matters. Navigating the complex system of veterans’ benefits can often be difficult, and this bill ensures that veterans have access to the necessary resources to protect their rights and receive the assistance they need in a timely manner.
These new laws reflect a broader effort to create a more supportive environment for veterans and military families in South Dakota. Governor Rhoden signed these bills into law during a ceremony at Douglas School District’s Vandenberg Elementary School as part of his ongoing Open for Opportunity tour. In total, Governor Rhoden has signed 211 bills into law this legislative session, with just two vetoes, demonstrating his commitment to making meaningful progress in areas that matter most to South Dakotans.
With these four new laws, South Dakota continues to set a high standard for the care and support of its military community, ensuring that those who have sacrificed for our country are given the recognition and resources they deserve.
