Pennsylvania Lawmaker Proposes Resolution Honoring Fallen Officers

State Representative Brian Munroe (D-144) has announced plans to introduce a resolution honoring Pennsylvania law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during 2024 and 2025. This initiative comes at a time when national statistics reveal a concerning increase in officer fatalities.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 147 officers died in the line of duty in 2024—a 25% increase from the 118 fatalities reported in 2023. Of those, 52 deaths were caused by firearms (a 13% increase), and 46 were the result of traffic-related incidents, marking a 48% spike in roadway fatalities.
As of March 2025, the Officer Down Memorial Page reports that 18 officers have already lost their lives in the line of duty this year. Gunfire continues to be the leading cause, responsible for 10 deaths to date
Despite these grim statistics, national sentiment toward law enforcement is trending upward. A 2024 Gallup poll revealed that 51% of Americans expressed confidence in the police, an eight-point jump from the previous year. The most notable increases were seen among young adults aged 18 to 34, people of color, and political independents—groups that have historically shown lower trust in law enforcement.
The resolution proposed by Rep. Munroe would specifically honor officers such as Police Officer Jaime Junior Roman and others who made the ultimate sacrifice. In a memo to colleagues, Munroe cited the extreme mental, emotional, and physical burdens placed on officers, including long hours, safety risks, and exposure to trauma. “Law enforcement officers sacrifice a great deal for all of us. We owe it to those who gave their lives to ensure their service and legacy are remembered,” Munroe wrote.
Highlighting another critical concern, a Police1.com survey from late 2024 reported that 83% of officers say their mental health impacts their job performance. The survey emphasized the growing need for agencies to invest in officer wellness programs and mental health resources.
Representative Munroe is calling on fellow lawmakers to join him in supporting this important resolution to recognize the brave men and women who serve, and those who have laid down their lives in service to their communities.
