Veteran Support Spotlight: Ambrosio Guillen State Home Celebrates 20 Years

In a heartfelt ceremony recognizing two decades of dedication to those who served, Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board Chairwoman Dr. Dawn Buckingham commemorated the 20-year anniversary of the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso. Joined by state and local leaders, the celebration honored the facility’s enduring role in providing high-quality care to West Texas Veterans and their families.
“For 20 years, this home has been a cornerstone of veteran care in the El Paso community,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “It is a privilege to honor those who wore the uniform by ensuring they receive the best possible care in their later years. The incredible staff here does more than provide medical care—they preserve dignity, honor sacrifice, and foster community.”
The Ambrosio Guillen Veterans Home, established in 2005, offers skilled nursing and long-term care to Texas Veterans, their spouses, and Gold Star parents. With 160 beds—60 of which are reserved for memory care patients facing Alzheimer’s or dementia—the facility is designed to meet both physical and emotional needs. Spread across nearly 43 acres, it includes wellness programs, art and music therapy, recreational activities, pet therapy, and off-site excursions to help residents stay active and engaged.
During the event, Veterans, staff, and guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and refreshments while reflecting on the impact the facility has made over the years. Commissioner Buckingham was joined by several local leaders, including State Rep. Claudia Ordaz, El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego, and El Paso City Rep. Cynthia Boyar Trejo. Members of the Benavidez-Patterson “All Airborne” Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association provided a Color Guard presentation.
The facility bears the name of Staff Sergeant Ambrosio Guillen, a Korean War hero and Medal of Honor recipient. Guillen gave his life leading his platoon through a brutal night assault, refusing medical aid so he could continue directing his men until the mission was complete. His courage and leadership are a guiding inspiration for the care delivered in the home that bears his name.
Texas continues to honor and invest in the well-being of its Veteran community, with Commissioner Buckingham championing new initiatives and support services through the Veterans Land Board. This week’s celebration is one of several milestones, including recent recognition of the five-year anniversary of the Richard A. Anderson Veterans Home and growing support for future Veterans cemeteries across the state.
The Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home remains a shining example of the state’s ongoing commitment to those who served. For eligible Veterans—especially those with a 70% or greater service-connected disability—residency in the home comes at no cost.
