Southern Indiana Launches Aviation Training Initiative

Southern Indiana is charting a bold course into the future of aviation with the launch of a new workforce initiative designed to prepare students and adult learners for high-demand careers in one of America’s most critical industries.

Education leaders, aviation officials, workforce partners, and private-sector supporters gathered in Sellersburg to celebrate the launch of the Southern Indiana Aviation Initiative, a comprehensive program focused on building a skilled pipeline for careers in aviation flight and aircraft maintenance.

Preparing Talent for a Growing Industry

The initiative centers on a hands-on curriculum that blends classroom learning with real-world training, giving participants a clear pathway into aviation careers that are both stable and in demand. Students can choose between two specialized tracks — Aviation Flight or Aviation Maintenance — each designed to accelerate progress toward post-secondary degrees and industry certifications.

By offering dual-credit opportunities, the program allows high school students to get a head start while still in school. Adult learners are also eligible, expanding access to career training across generations.

Organizers say the goal is simple: align education with opportunity.

“We are not just educating students; we are building a pipeline to high-paying careers,” said Senator Chris Garten, who helped champion the initiative. “This is about making sure local talent is ready to step into jobs that will support families and strengthen our region for years to come.”

A Region Positioned for Global Aviation

Southern Indiana’s location makes it uniquely suited for aviation growth. Nestled between two of the world’s largest air cargo hubs — UPS Worldport in Louisville and the FedEx Express Hub in Indianapolis — the region sits at the crossroads of global commerce.

“With the UPS Worldport in Louisville and the FedEx Express Hub in Indianapolis, Southern Indiana is situated in a global aviation corridor,” Garten said. “However, infrastructure alone isn’t enough; we need a skilled workforce ready to seize these opportunities.”

The initiative aims to ensure that local residents are prepared to meet that demand, turning geographic advantage into long-term economic strength.

A Major Investment in People and Potential

The Southern Indiana Aviation Initiative was made possible through a combination of public investment and private-sector support. In 2025, $6.5 million was secured to fund half of the project’s capital needs, with additional backing from the Caesars Foundation and CenterPoint Energy.

Garten emphasized that collaboration was key to getting the program off the ground.

“We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Caesars Foundation and CenterPoint Energy for their generous support,” he said. “This initiative is a prime example of a successful public-private partnership investing in what matters most — our youth.”

Supporters say the funding reflects a shared belief that workforce development is one of the smartest long-term investments a community can make.

From Education to Economic Impact

Beyond individual career opportunities, leaders involved in the initiative see broader benefits for Southern Indiana’s economy. By creating a local talent pipeline, the program helps attract and retain aviation-related employers while keeping skilled workers close to home.

“I was proud to fight for this funding because it effectively ensures our region remains competitive for decades to come,” Garten said. “This historic investment shows what’s possible when education, industry, and community partners work together.”

As the Southern Indiana Aviation Initiative officially takes off, organizers say the program represents more than a new curriculum — it’s a runway to opportunity, innovation, and sustained economic growth.
