American Students First: Majority Reject Trump’s Chinese Student Visa Plan

American voters are making it clear: U.S. students come first. A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 73% of likely voters believe qualified American high school students should be prioritized over foreign students for admission into U.S. colleges and universities. The poll comes after former President Donald Trump proposed issuing visas for 600,000 Chinese students annually—more than double the current number. While 41% support Trump’s idea, nearly half (46%) oppose it, including 24% who strongly oppose. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has argued that many smaller colleges would not survive without Chinese enrollment, but a majority of voters across party lines disagree. The numbers cut across race, income, and party affiliation, with majorities in every group siding with the view that American students deserve first consideration.
