Axolotl Rescue Takes in “Cheese Babes” in Need

A group of tiny, injured creatures is getting a second chance — thanks to a passionate rescue effort in New England.

Libertyland Axolotl Rescue has taken in 16 neglected axolotls, many suffering from missing limbs and bacterial infections, after being surrendered from an overcrowded situation.

Now, volunteers are working around the clock to help them heal — and hopefully find forever homes.

Meet the “Cheese Babes”

The rescued axolotls — affectionately nicknamed the “cheese babes” — have names to match: Colby, Monterey, Mozzarella, Ricotta, Romano, and Burrata, among others.

While a few have already been adopted, most are still undergoing rehabilitation.

Some required immediate veterinary care, while others were placed with experienced foster families who specialize in exotic animal recovery.

A Remarkable Ability to Heal

Axolotls, a species of Mexican salamander, are known for something extraordinary — they can regenerate limbs and even parts of their organs.

That ability is now on full display.

Photos from January to March show dramatic progress, with gills regrowing and limbs slowly returning. Despite the severity of their condition, many of the rescued animals are steadily improving.

It’s a powerful reminder of both their resilience — and the importance of proper care.

A Growing Need for Education

Founded in 2024, Libertyland focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming axolotls while educating the public on responsible pet ownership.

In just one year, the organization has taken in more than 100 adult axolotls and successfully rehomed nearly all of them.

But cases like this highlight a larger issue.

Axolotls can lay hundreds — even up to 1,000 — eggs at a time, making overcrowding a common problem when owners are unprepared. Without proper knowledge, situations can quickly spiral, leading to neglect.

Caring for exotic animals comes at a cost, and Libertyland is now seeking donations to cover veterinary care, supplies, and long-term foster support.

The group is also encouraging people to get involved by fostering, adopting, or contributing items through their wishlist.

For these “cheese babes,” recovery is already underway — but their journey isn’t over yet.
