US Coast Guard Icebreaker Frees Cruise Ship in Antarctica

Cruise Ship Stalls in Antarctic Ice
A luxury expedition cruise ship sailing near Antarctica found itself at a standstill after becoming trapped in thick sea ice in the Ross Sea. The Scenic Eclipse II was unable to break through the frozen pack on its own and requested assistance as conditions slowed its progress near McMurdo Sound.

U.S. Coast Guard Steps In
The U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker USCGC Polar Star responded to the request late Friday night. Bodycam and onboard footage released by the Coast Guard shows the massive icebreaker making repeated, close-range passes through the dense ice, gradually loosening the frozen pack surrounding the cruise ship.

The operation required precision and patience, with Polar Star carefully navigating around the vessel to avoid damage while clearing a safe path through the ice.

Safe Passage to Open Water
Once the surrounding ice was broken up, the Scenic Eclipse II was escorted several miles into open water to ensure it could safely resume its voyage. The Coast Guard confirmed there were no injuries reported among the ship’s passengers or crew, and the vessel was able to continue its Antarctic expedition.

The Scenic Eclipse II carries up to 228 guests and 176 crew members, though capacity is typically reduced during polar voyages due to environmental and safety regulations.

A Milestone Mission for Polar Star
The rescue coincided with a major milestone for the USCGC Polar Star, which marked its 50th year of commissioned service on the same day. Commissioned in 1976 and based in Seattle, Polar Star is the United States’ only active heavy icebreaker and remains a critical asset for Antarctic operations.

A Memorable Moment at Sea
While the situation required assistance, the cruise line emphasized that conditions normalized quickly and praised the professionalism of the Coast Guard crew. Passengers reportedly marked the dramatic moment with champagne on deck — turning an icy delay into an unforgettable polar memory.
