From Stray to Station Mascot
On a frigid February night in Michigan, officers from the Milford Police Department responded to a call about a stray dog wandering alone. What they didn’t know was that the senior pup would soon become the department’s newest — and most beloved — member.
The dog was found sitting quietly on a random porch with no tags and no microchip. After searching the area for an owner with no luck, officers brought him back to the station to warm up.
A Week of Waiting
Staff quickly noticed the dog’s gentle personality. He was mild-mannered, sweet and clearly comfortable around people. The department transferred him to a local shelter, keeping tabs on him in hopes someone would claim him.
But after a week passed with no owner stepping forward, officers faced a choice: leave his future uncertain — or bring him home for good.
They chose the latter.
Meet Lil Craig
Veterinarians estimate the dog is about 9 years old. He’s missing a few teeth, one ear doesn’t quite stand up and his hearing isn’t what it used to be. But none of that mattered to the officers.
The department officially adopted him and named him “Lil Craig,” after the officer who first brought him to the station.
Now, Lil Craig lives full-time at the police department, roaming the halls, greeting visitors and providing what officers describe as much-needed stress relief.
A Second Chance — and a New Purpose
Lil Craig may be a little slow-paced, but he loves being around people and has quickly become a fixture at the station.
Sometimes heroes don’t wear badges — sometimes they nap under desks and greet you at the door.
