Teen Swims Miles Through Rough Seas to Save Family

A Swim Fueled by Courage
Austin Appelbee and his family were enjoying the water near Quindalup, Western Australia, when strong winds and rough seas suddenly swept them farther and farther from shore. With rented kayaks and paddleboards failing under worsening conditions, the family faced a terrifying reality: they were being pulled out to sea.
A Life-or-Death Decision
As the situation grew more dangerous, Austin’s mother made an impossible choice — asking her eldest son to swim for help. Austin removed his life jacket so it wouldn’t restrict his movement and began a grueling solo swim through towering waves, determined to reach shore.
For nearly four hours, Austin battled exhaustion, cold water and fear, repeating a simple mantra to keep going: just keep swimming. When he finally reached land after swimming roughly 2.5 miles, he collapsed on the beach — but not before alerting authorities.
Holding On Through the Night
Back at sea, Austin’s mother and two younger siblings clung to a paddleboard as daylight faded. They spent up to 10 hours in the water, singing, joking and trying to stay calm as waves intensified and temperatures dropped.
A search helicopter eventually spotted them drifting miles from shore. Cold, shaken and exhausted, they were rescued just in time.
A Hero Beyond His Years
Police praised Austin’s determination and bravery, crediting his actions with saving his family’s lives. Though only 13, his calm thinking and physical endurance proved extraordinary.
It was not just a heroic swim — it was a reminder that courage sometimes comes from the youngest among us.
