Inflation Comparison: President Trump’s First Month vs. Previous Administrations

This week’s WG Discussion Points, by David Winston of the Winston Group, highlights the release of the February Consumer Price Index (CPI) report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — marking the first inflation report of President Trump’s new term. The report compares inflation rates across different presidential administrations, showcasing the performance of inflation during President Trump’s first month in office, alongside the first months of the previous eight presidents, including his prior term. For President Trump’s first month, inflation increased by 0.4%, with slight upticks in gas, food, and electricity. It’s also important to note that former President Biden’s first month inflation rate was relatively low at 0.5%, which predates the record inflation that began in the summer of 2021. The January CPI report, marking the final inflation score for the Biden administration, reveals a cumulative increase of 21.4% in prices from his first month to the last.
