Alamo’s Historic Roof Gets Major Overhaul: What You Need to Know

The Alamo, a historic symbol of Texas’ rich heritage, is set for a major preservation project as its roof undergoes much-needed replacement. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced that the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has approved the installation of a temporary enclosure over the 281-year-old church, marking a significant step in preserving this iconic structure for future generations.

The current roof of the Alamo has surpassed its serviceable lifespan, with exposure to the elements causing severe deterioration. Buckingham explained in a post on X, “The current roof has exceeded its serviceable lifetime and exposure to the elements has caused the roof to deteriorate, resulting in severe structural, drainage, and waterproofing issues.” The temporary enclosure will serve as a protective barrier against moisture and other environmental factors while the roof is being replaced.

This crucial roof replacement, set to begin in 2026, will address these structural issues, ensuring the preservation of the Alamo Church for years to come. The enclosure will not only shield the structure from further damage but also allow essential preservation tasks such as stone repointing and moisture mitigation to take place.

As reported by News 4 San Antonio, Commissioner Buckingham highlighted the importance of this project for the continued preservation of the Alamo. “Replacing the roof is critical to preserving this architectural treasure for future generations,” she stated in her X post. The public will be able to watch the progress of the construction via the Alamo Plaza Live Cam, offering a unique glimpse into the restoration process.

The THC’s decision to approve the temporary enclosure comes as part of the broader effort to protect the Alamo, a site of profound historical significance. Buckingham further emphasized the Alamo’s role in American history, stating, “As Texas Land Commissioner, it’s my honor and duty to ensure the @OfficialAlamo forever stands as a beacon of liberty for all who visit.”

While the Alamo will remain open to the public during the construction, access to certain areas will be limited for safety reasons. The work is expected to proceed over the next few years, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the Alamo stands strong for future generations of Texans and visitors alike.

For those interested in tracking the progress of the project, the public can view the work through the Alamo Plaza Live Cam, available on the official Alamo website: The Alamo Live Cam.
