Eugene Ludwig, former U.S. Comptroller of the Currency under Bill Clinton, says voters had a better grasp of the economy than government statistics suggested. In a recent Politico op-ed, Ludwig argued that official data on unemployment, wages, and inflation failed to reflect Americans’ real financial struggles. He pointed to flaws in economic metrics that underestimated the impact of rising costs on middle- and low-income households.
While Democrats touted a strong economy, Ludwig’s research suggests government figures painted an overly optimistic picture. His conclusion? Policymakers need to take a harder look at the data—and listen to voters.
