Apple vs. Apple Cinemas: Lawsuit Alleges Consumer Confusion
Adobe Stock/stokkete/stock.adobe.com

Apple is suing a growing East Coast movie theater chain for trademark infringement, claiming the company—Apple Cinemas—is misleading consumers into thinking it’s affiliated with the tech giant. The theater chain recently announced plans to expand nationwide, but Apple argues the branding is a deliberate attempt to trade on its name and reputation. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts federal court, alleges Apple Cinemas ignored a cease-and-desist and began using a stylized apple logo while opening theaters near Apple Stores. With complaints surfacing about the chain’s facilities and customer experience, Apple says it’s protecting its brand from confusion and reputational harm—and is now asking the court to force a name change.
