As midterm season approaches, Democrats are eyeing a possible path to reclaiming the House of Representatives. History shows that shifts in party ID advantages and margins among independents have often determined control of Congress. From the Republican wave elections of 1994 and 2010, to the Democratic gains in 2006 and 2018, winning independents by double digits has often been the deciding factor. With Democrats losing ground in overall party identification, their chances now hinge on making significant gains among independents—while Republicans face the challenge of holding onto their +3 party ID advantage. Could 2026 be another year where midterm history repeats itself?
