Billy Bob Thornton on Award Shows: Less Politics, More Gratitude

“Stick to What It Is”
Billy Bob Thornton isn’t holding back when it comes to his opinion on Hollywood’s growing trend of turning award show speeches into political statements. During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Oscar-winning actor made it clear that he believes award ceremonies should focus on recognizing artistic achievement—not activism.
“I’ve got plenty of [awards],” Thornton said, reflecting on his decades-long career. “These days, it’s more about people pontificating about how awesome they are. If you win something, you should honor the people who gave it to you.”
A Time and Place for Causes
Thornton, 70, argued that while causes matter, award shows aren’t the right stage for them. “There is a time and place for that,” he said. “Don’t go up there and talk about saving the badgers in Wisconsin or something.” His point: if celebrities truly care about an issue, they can take direct action offstage rather than using a televised spotlight to make a statement.
“If You Have the Money, Do It”
The Landman star took aim at wealthy entertainers who, in his view, use social causes as a performance. “If you have a billion dollars and you want to save the badgers—save them,” Thornton said. “That’s barely going to cut into your budget.” Rogan agreed, adding that such moments often serve more to showcase virtue than create real impact.
A Career Grounded in Perspective
Thornton, best known for Sling Blade and his latest series Landman alongside Demi Moore, credits his late-blooming fame for keeping him grounded. “If I had found success at 21, who knows if I’d even be here now,” he reflected.
