A Stranger’s Kidney Gift Gives Maryland Dad a Second Chance

A New Year, A Second Chance
As 2026 begins, a Maryland father is stepping into the new year with renewed hope — and a profound sense of gratitude — thanks to a life-saving kidney transplant made possible by a stranger who became family.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Last year, instead of celebrating the holidays at home, Jeff Deckman of Aberdeen, Maryland, was hospitalized after learning his autoimmune kidney disease, IgA nephropathy, had rapidly progressed. Doctors told him he urgently needed a transplant. With waitlists stretching five to seven years, time was not on his side.
Facing an uncertain future, Deckman found himself wondering whether everyday moments — birthdays, beach trips, graduations — might be slipping away.
A Leap of Faith on Social Media
With limited options, Deckman’s wife, Jen, made a decision that changed everything. In February 2024, she shared her husband’s story on Facebook, posting anywhere she could and asking for help.
That message reached Robin Phelan.
After reading Jen’s words about her husband and their family, Phelan felt compelled to act. She began the screening process and, after months of testing and evaluation, learned she was a compatible kidney donor.
A Decision Made With Heart
Phelan discussed the decision with her husband, Kevin, who immediately supported her choice. By August, she received the call confirming she had been approved. Surgery was scheduled for November 11.
The transplant was successful.
Two Families, Forever Connected
Weeks after surgery, the Deckmans and the Phelans reunited — no longer strangers, but families bound together in a way few experience. Jeff is recovering well, and doctors are optimistic about his long-term outlook. Phelan is also healthy, and both families say the emotional bond created by the transplant is lifelong.
