The “Trade-Down” Generation: How Gen Z Is Balancing Luxury and Real Life

Selective Spending, Not Full Cutbacks
As inflation lingers and the job market cools, Gen Z is redefining how to spend — and save. Younger Americans are cutting back on dining out, delivery apps, and trendy clothes, but not necessarily tightening their wallets across the board. Instead, they’re prioritizing experiences and brands that feel meaningful or authentic.

“What we’re seeing from younger generations isn’t a complete pullback,” said Neil Saunders of GlobalData Retail. “It’s more of a selective prioritization of spending.” In short, Gen Z is willing to trade down on daily expenses to afford the occasional luxury — like a favorite designer handbag or concert ticket.

Where They’re Spending Less — and More
According to PwC’s October report on Gen Z shopping habits, about half of respondents said they plan to spend less on dining out over the next six months. One-third said they’ll scale back on clothing, and 29% plan to spend less on alcohol.

Meanwhile, luxury brands like Coach are still thriving. “Gen Z is highly fashion engaged,” said Joanne Crevoiserat, CEO of Coach’s parent company, Tapestry. “They’re spending slightly more of their budget on fashion.”

Economic Reality Bites
Behind these choices lies a challenging economic landscape. Student loan payments have resumed, prices remain elevated, and youth unemployment recently climbed to 9.2%. With fewer entry-level job openings and slower hiring, many young people are adjusting expectations — and budgets.

Millennials and Gen Z are also eating at home more often, putting pressure on fast-casual chains like Chipotle and Sweetgreen. Across all income levels, consumers are trading down, from skipping restaurant meals to choosing budget-friendly Thanksgiving kits from Walmart.

For Gen Z, this isn’t just frugality — it’s financial realism in an economy that rewards careful choices over constant consumption.
