Home Builders Slash Prices as High Rates and Low Demand Take Toll

With homebuyer demand cooling and interest rates remaining high, more U.S. home builders are slashing prices to stay competitive. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 30% of builders have dropped prices this month—the highest share since 2022. Despite the cuts, rising material costs, tariffs, and local regulations continue to squeeze builder margins. Aimee Bertrand of the Greater Houston Builders Association says builders are facing tough choices, even as the Houston region sees continued interest from relocating families drawn to more affordable land on the city’s outskirts.
