This Entrepreneur Sells Elite Protection Dogs to the Wealthy

From Policy Work to Protection Dogs
At 51, Kim Greene walked away from a high-stakes policy and security career to build something entirely different — a business that now sells elite protection dogs for up to $175,000 each. From a sprawling ranch in Livingston, Montana, Greene co-founded Svalinn, a boutique operation that breeds and trains highly specialized dogs for wealthy families seeking both companionship and security.
A Dog With an ‘On Switch’ and an ‘Off Switch’
Svalinn dogs are trained for nearly two years in obedience, protection, agility, and socialization. They’re designed to live as family pets while remaining deployable in a moment of danger. Trainers emphasize the ability to switch instantly from defense to calm obedience — a balance Greene calls “a practiced art.”
Clients don’t need to be physically imposing or professionally trained. In fact, Svalinn intentionally exposes dogs to a wide range of voices and handlers so they’re comfortable responding to everyday people, not just professionals barking commands.
The Business Behind the Bark
The company houses up to 46 dogs at a time on its 170-acre ranch and reported nearly $3 million in revenue in 2024. Each dog is personally delivered to its new home, with follow-up training to ensure families are confident and capable handlers.
Greene often discourages potential buyers, stressing that these dogs aren’t status symbols. “This is not a product that’s for everybody,” she says, prioritizing fit and responsibility over volume.
A Long Road to Success
Svalinn’s roots trace back to Nairobi, Kenya, where Greene and her former husband initially ran a security consultancy. The idea for protection dogs emerged after adopting one for personal safety. Years of financial strain, a move to the U.S., rebranding, and eventual divorce followed before the business found its footing.
Security, Reimagined in the American West
Today, Svalinn thrives amid growing demand for discreet, personal security in the American West. Greene now calls the company her “dream job,” one that blends entrepreneurship, motherhood, and life in the mountains — with dogs at the center of it all.
