Siblings Spring Into Action During School Bus Emergency

Quick Thinking on a School Bus
A Moment That Changed Everything
Surveillance footage released by Crestview Local Schools shows 8-year-old Catrina seated near the front of the bus when she noticed the driver struggling to breathe. When Catrina asked if she was okay, the driver shook her head no — a silent signal that something was seriously wrong.
Calling in Reinforcements
Without hesitation, Catrina ran to the back of the bus to find her older brother, Charlie, a seventh grader she trusted in a crisis. Charlie immediately rushed to the front, grabbed the bus radio, and contacted the school to report the emergency. At the same time, an eighth-grade student named Kali called 911 to ensure first responders were on the way.
Training That Made the Difference
According to reports, the bus driver had previously instructed her regular riders on how to use the radio in case of an emergency — a lesson that proved critical. The driver was hospitalized and later released, crediting the students for remembering her instructions and acting quickly under pressure.
Charlie later explained that he knew calling the school was the fastest way to get help. Catrina described her brother as someone who stays calm and focused on the outside, even when he may be scared inside — a quality that likely made all the difference that day.
A Community Filled with Pride
Superintendent Jim Grubbs praised the students’ actions, calling them “truly outstanding.” He noted that their ability to remain calm, communicate clearly, and work together helped prevent what could have been a far more serious outcome.
