Sticker Shock Nation: Poll Finds Grocery Prices Stressing Out Most Americans

A new AP-NORC poll reveals that the cost of groceries is weighing heavily on American families—across age groups, income levels, and regions. Nearly 9 in 10 U.S. adults say grocery bills are a source of stress, with about half calling it a major stressor. While younger Americans report more anxiety over housing and savings, grocery costs remain a unifying burden—from teenagers using “buy now, pay later” services to retirees relying on food banks. The poll also highlights deeper financial pressures among women and Hispanic adults, as well as growing concerns about inflation, wages, and the lasting effects of federal tariffs. As prices continue to climb, Americans are adjusting—cutting back, shopping cheaper, and stretching every dollar.
