Why Dropping an F-Bomb Might Boost Your Workout

Swearing Your Way to Strength? Science Says Yes
If you’ve ever let out a well-timed curse while lifting something heavy or powering through a workout, science says you may have been onto something. New research suggests that swearing can actually make you physically stronger, helping people push past mental barriers and hold on longer during demanding physical tasks.
The Study Behind the Swears
Researchers led by Dr. Richard Stephens ran two experiments involving 192 participants performing a chair push-up, a challenging exercise that requires supporting your full body weight with your arms. Participants repeated either a swear word or a neutral word every two seconds while holding the position. The results were clear: those who swore were able to support themselves significantly longer than those who stayed polite.
Why Cursing Works
The boost doesn’t come from anger alone. According to researchers, swearing appears to trigger psychological disinhibition, reducing self-consciousness and hesitation. Participants who swore reported feeling more confident, less distracted, and more “in the zone,” a mental state known as psychological flow that helps people perform at their best.
A Pattern That Keeps Showing Up
This isn’t an isolated finding. Previous studies by Stephens and others have shown that swearing can increase grip strength, cycling power output, and endurance during wall sits, pushups, and plank holds. In one study, cyclists saw an 8% increase in grip strength simply by repeating a swear word.
More Than Muscle
Swearing has also been linked to higher pain tolerance, reduced perception of pain, stronger social bonds, and even improved memory. Researchers are now exploring whether the same confidence-boosting effects apply to situations like public speaking and dating, where hesitation often holds people back.
