Trump Calls for Return of ‘Redskins’ and ‘Indians’ Team Names

Former President Donald Trump reignited controversy this weekend by calling on two major sports franchises—the Washington Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians—to revert to their former names. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the “Washington ‘Whatever’s'” should immediately return to being the Redskins and called for Cleveland to reclaim the Indians name, citing support from Native Americans and a loss of heritage. Both organizations quickly shut down the suggestion. Commanders owner Josh Harris reaffirmed the team has no plans to change course, and Guardians executive Chris Antonetti noted their commitment to building the Guardians brand since 2021. The name changes, made amid broader national discussions on race and representation, remain divisive.
