White House Seeks $58M to Bolster Protection Amid Rising Political Violence

The Trump administration has formally asked Congress to approve an additional $58 million in funding for security services following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The request, first reported Sunday, would bolster protection for members of the executive and judicial branches and could also extend to members of Congress, though legislative leaders will determine their own measures. The move comes as House Democrats held a virtual security briefing with the House sergeant at arms and the Capitol police chief to discuss heightened concerns. Kirk was shot and killed last week during an event at a Utah university, an incident that has fueled partisan tensions and raised alarms over the rise of political violence. According to the University of Maryland’s Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, more than 520 acts of terrorism and targeted violence occurred in the U.S. during the first half of 2025, a nearly 40% jump from the same period last year. Congressional leaders are now weighing both security upgrades and the looming September 30 deadline to fund the government, underscoring the high-stakes atmosphere in Washington.
