CNN anchor Jake Tapper expressed disbelief over a recent report revealing that European nations spent more on Russian oil than on aid to Ukraine in 2024. During a segment with Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) on The Lead, Tapper noted that this effectively meant “the Europeans are funding both sides” of the war. The report found that EU member states spent €21.9 billion on Russian energy—€3.2 billion more than their financial aid to Ukraine. The revelation has drawn criticism, including from President Donald Trump, who blasted European allies for their continued reliance on Russian resources while expecting U.S. security support.
