Saved by His Daughter

A Life-Changing Diagnosis
In Hollywood, James Emmanuel is embracing life with renewed gratitude after a journey that nearly cost him everything. In January 2025, a heart attack revealed an even deeper health crisis—his kidneys were failing. What followed was a year of dialysis, uncertainty, and waiting for a donor match that could save his life.

A Daughter’s Quiet Determination
Behind the scenes, Emmanuel’s daughter, Gaelle Merryman, was already taking action. Without telling her father—knowing he might refuse—she began the process of seeing if she could donate her kidney. After months of effort and faith, she received life-changing news in early December: she was a match.

Just days before Christmas, Merryman donated her kidney, giving her father not just a transplant, but a future.

A Breakthrough in the Operating Room
The procedure, performed at Memorial Regional Hospital by Dr. Adarsh Vijay, was groundbreaking. The hospital utilized the advanced da Vinci 5 robotic system—marking the first time a robotic kidney transplant had been performed in South Florida.

Robotic-assisted surgery allows for smaller incisions, reduced recovery time, and quicker returns to daily life. Patients can often go home within just a few days and resume normal activities within weeks. While the robot enhances precision, it remains fully guided by the surgeon’s expertise.

A Rare and Promising Advancement
According to Dr. Vijay, fewer than 5% of hospitals nationwide currently perform kidney transplants using robotic technology. That makes Emmanuel’s surgery not only life-saving, but part of a growing frontier in medical innovation.

A Renewed Outlook on Life
Now three months removed from the procedure, Emmanuel says he feels blessed—both for his health and for the daughter who made it possible. His story is one of resilience, faith, and the extraordinary impact of organ donation.

“If you could at least benefit one more person,” he said, “make them feel the way I did—I’m down.”
