Senator Mark Johnson Honored for Protecting State Fire Safety Account

Commitment to Firefighters Recognized

Minnesota Senator Mark Johnson has been honored by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) for his steadfast commitment to ensuring that critical resources for firefighters remain intact. Johnson received the association’s 2025 Legislative Award for his leadership in protecting the Fire Safety Account — a key source of funding for firefighter training, education, and emergency response support across the state.

The award was presented at the East Grand Forks Fire Department, where Johnson was joined by local and state fire officials, including East Grand Forks Fire Chief Eric Boushee, Albertville Fire Chief and MSFCA President Eric Bullen, and Edina Fire Chief Andrew Slama.

Safeguarding a Lifeline for Public Safety

The Fire Safety Account serves as the financial backbone for several essential programs that support Minnesota’s fire service community. Funded by a small surcharge on property and casualty insurance policies, the account provides operational funding for the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division, the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education, and the state’s specialized response teams. It also plays a vital role in ensuring that every fire department in Minnesota—urban and rural alike—has access to quality training and equipment.

“The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association is honored to present Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson with a Legislative Award for 2025,” said Chief Bullen. “Senator Johnson is a steadfast supporter of the Minnesota Fire Service, and in 2025 he was instrumental in keeping the Fire Safety Account intact during the Legislative session. The account directly impacts the training and safety of every fire department in the state, and we deeply appreciate his leadership and continued support.”

Standing Up for Firefighters

During the 2025 legislative session, proposals surfaced that would have redirected portions of the Fire Safety Account to unrelated areas of the state budget. Senator Johnson played a pivotal role in opposing those efforts, working alongside colleagues to ensure the funds remained dedicated to their intended purpose—supporting the men and women who protect Minnesota communities every day.

“Fire departments depend on the Fire Safety Account to provide training, equipment, and resources that keep our communities safe,” said Senator Johnson. “I’m grateful for the dedication of our firefighters and for the opportunity to support them in their work. Even if you never have a fire emergency, we all rest easier knowing the fire department is ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”

Johnson’s leadership on this issue underscores his broader commitment to public safety and to maintaining the integrity of programs that serve first responders. His efforts reflect a bipartisan recognition of the essential role firefighters play in keeping Minnesota’s cities and towns safe.

Honoring Service and Leadership

The recognition from the MSFCA highlights the ongoing collaboration between state lawmakers and Minnesota’s fire service leaders. The association, representing more than 500 fire departments statewide, works to promote fire prevention, safety education, and professional development for firefighters.

The ceremony at the East Grand Forks Fire Department celebrated not only Senator Johnson’s legislative accomplishments but also the shared mission of ensuring Minnesota’s first responders have the resources they need to perform their life-saving work.

As fire chiefs and firefighters gathered to present Johnson with the plaque, they emphasized that maintaining a fully funded Fire Safety Account is about more than budgets — it’s about ensuring readiness and resilience in every corner of the state.

A Legacy of Support

Johnson, who serves as Senate Minority Leader, has long advocated for policies that strengthen Minnesota’s emergency response infrastructure and uphold local control for community-based departments. His leadership on the Fire Safety Account reinforces that commitment.

With his recognition from the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association, Johnson joins a select group of legislators who have been acknowledged for their dedication to protecting critical fire service funding and ensuring that Minnesota’s firefighters remain trained, equipped, and ready to serve.
